Our Story

Grove Street Apothecary has been more than 25 years in the making, and it’s beginnings happened quite accidentally, as most love stories do… 

Shannon was first introduced to essential oils in the mid 1990s, when her mother purchased Jasmine, Peppermint and Lavender oils from a local natural foods store. They both enjoyed the benefits of headache relief, calming, relaxation, and even wound healing. Jasmine always made a beautiful natural perfume, as well. In time, she purchased some of her own oils, along with a book of recipes for her oil burner. Ah, yes, the oil burner… from the days before we knew that excessively heating our essential oils in such a way may very well be damaging all of the healing goodness they are comprised of. The days before the internet was such a widely used plethora of information; before blogging and online learning. The days before wifi. Can you even imagine? 

As the decades passed, Shannon’s library and apothecary grew, and so did her love for these exquisite gifts from nature. On this journey with Aromatherapy and her massage therapy career, Shannon longed to learn and do so much more with essential oils, but– life, right? Always something holding her back. The nudge finally came with the essential oils boom in the 2010s. Some of these companies had already been around 20-30 or more years, but with the internet being what it is now, it became easier for them, and all of the new essential oils companies that were emerging, to get their products in peoples’ hands. Unfortunately, those products often come with conflicting and dangerous information. Increased global essential oil usage brought an increase in essential oil injuries and sensitizations. It was heartbreaking and frustrating to see the damage being done, not only to the people exposing themselves and others to essential oils in unsafe ways, but also the damage to the reputation of Aromatherapy. Shannon’s next move was to enroll in an Aromatherapy certification program, and from that moment, Grove Street Apothecary took up residence in her heart and mind; unfolding little by little every day. 

Grove Street Apothecary is an Aromatherapy brand focused on safety and education. We are committed to providing safe, practical, science based information for home and professional Aromatherapy use. We strive to be eco-friendly and sustainable in our operations, and use only safe, natural ingredients in our products. We hope you enjoy everything we have to offer as much as we enjoy being here. It was a much longer road to certification than anticipated, but Shannon completed her program in 2021 and is thrilled to be here now, sharing her Aromatherapy knowledge and love with you.
